R. Christopher “Chris” Martin is a special partner in Chehardy Sherman Williams’ healthcare section where he focuses on general healthcare regulatory, compliance, and risk management. He is board-certified in health law in Louisiana and has experience advising providers on negotiation and preparation of a wide range of contractual arrangements between numerous healthcare entities, including mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures. He has further assisted clients with physician/hospital relationships, Medicare and Medicaid coverage and reimbursement, reimbursement/audit defense and compliance, licensure and accreditation, false claims analysis, professional licensing before administrative & licensing boards, disruptive physician issues, Stark/Anti-Kickback law, dispute resolution, and health information technology – Federal Qualified Health Center compliance.
Mr. Martin has been recognized by his peers as a Top Lawyer in Healthcare Law in New Orleans Magazine, was named a Leader in Law by City Business, and was a member of the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute. He is an approved arbitrator for American Arbitration Association, American Health Law Association & FINRA. Mr. Martin has received the highest rating by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory regarding legal ability and adherence to ethical standards, professional reliability and diligence. He is a regular contributor to the Louisiana Hospital Association Impact Lawbrief Newsletter and has had articles published by the American Arbitration Association, Louisiana Bar Journal, and Loyola Law Review. He has also made presentations at the New Orleans Bar Association and the Louisiana Hospital Association Annual Health Law Symposium.
Before joining Chehardy Sherman Williams’ New Orleans office, Mr. Martin practiced at Chaffe McCall, and prior to that he served as in-house Counsel at Ochsner Health System. While at Ochsner, he advised management on a wide variety of legal, regulatory, compliance, and risk management issues and reviewed, negotiated, and drafted contracts for the hospital, physicians, joint ventures and other transactions. Prior to his tenure at Ochsner, he founded one of the first full-service dispute resolution firms in the New Orleans area, Martin Mediation Group, and personally conducted over 1200 mediations and over 20 arbitrations. He has acted as chair of numerous medical review panels, swerved as a peer review hearing officer, and mediated and arbitrated a wide range of healthcare disputes including managed care, medical malpractice, employment, and business disputes between healthcare providers and suppliers. Mr. Martin has also been in private practice representing defendants in a broad range of maritime and civil cases after a two-year judicial clerkship in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
In the community, Mr. Martin serves on the board of directors of Lambeth House Foundation and is active in community ministries at Trinity Episcopal Church.
